Chiang Mai | Thailand :: Siam Rice Cooking School Review

An extremely popular activity for Chiang Mai, a Thai cooking class was high on my list of things to do here. We actively read reviews on trip advisor, spoke to fellow travelers and researched to find Siam Rice cooking School a great fit for us. Nancy and Pot picked us up from our guesthouse and we started the day by shopping for ingredients for our 6 course meal at the local market. Here, we picked up some Thai ginger, Galangal, tasted a few flavors of basil (lime, hairy, holy, sweet and spicy) and watched a lady fry up some bamboo worms. Once we had all our goods, we headed to Nancy and Pot’s home to begin our class.

Since there were only 3 of us in the class that day, we received private attention from the master chef, Nancy, which was a treat. We mastered the techniques of Thai cooking – lots of prep work, only 2 mins of actual cooking – and feasted on our final dishes and learned some vegetable carving. We even made red and panang curry paste from scratch!

Nancy’s kitchen was immaculate and dirty dishes were instantly cleaned with the aid of her helpers. She was extremely jolly, a blast to work with and was just as interested in our background, food and culture, as we were hers. She took tons of pictures of us while we were hard at work and sent us home with a certificate and recipe book. We highly recommend the Siam Rice Cooking School if you ever end up in Chiang Mai!
