In the artistic capital of Yogyakarta, we stayed in the hip area of Prawirotaman, bursting with cafés, intellectual talks and university students. Ministry of Coffee guesthouse fit right in with very comfortable rooms, plush beds, English cable TV and free internet (we did truly laze around here in style at least two full days to recover). With a rented motorbike, we were minutes away from the main street in town (Maliboro St) as well as the historical palace and water castle. The staff was accommodating and the library within the coffee shop was comfortable and fully stocked of the classics!

In Ubud, there are plentiful Balinese homestays where basic accommodation can be found for $10 (fan rooms with shared bathroom) as well as luxurious 5 star hotels with all the amenities, such as the Four Seasons. A 30 minute ride east of the Yogyakarta city center will bring you to Prambanan Hindu Temple. Manali and I hopped onto our trusty motorbike for the journey, Manali screaming in my ear at regular intervals to “slow down”.
