A 30 minute ride east of the Yogyakarta city center will bring you to Prambanan Hindu Temple. Manali and I hopped onto our trusty motorbike for the journey, Manali screaming in my ear at regular intervals to “slow down”.
Following the signs we pulled into the parking lot of the park complex, littered with food stalls and souvenir hawkers. We wound ourselves through the maze of stalls, and finally found the park entrance. Our tickets cost 60,000 IDR, half off as we qualified for a student discount.

Walking through the park gates we were a little disappointed to find that a portion of the temple was under restoration efforts, which limits access and certainly does nothing to add to the aesthetics.
We arrived later in the afternoon, for the possibility of catching the sunset, but the park closes at 5:15pm, and the park staff was insistent on us leaving promptly, so don’t count on any sunset photos.
The temple was simple although large, and the park grounds themselves were also well groomed. Educational and historic information was easily found through the site providing some interesting context and appreciation, so it’s worth the short ride outside of town.
